The Count of Monte Cristo: Summary
On a night in France, Dantés and Mondego land onto an island named Elba. The two journeys into the island primarily looking for 2 things, to be the next captain of a ship in Morel's Marseilles-based shipping business and the lovely Mercedes.
When they arrive in the city that night, they are met upon some of the city's force and running/hiding from their lives, Mondego shoots a person down. Following that night, Napoleon tells Dantés to deliver a secret letter and to let it not be known to anyone else, eventually this does not happen and Fernand is able to secretly open the letter, hence knowing the contents of the letter. Knowing that this letter is very sacred, Fernand and his shipping colleague Danglars, betray Dantés by making the letter aware to Villefort.
Dantés is taken to the authorities in front of Villefort. He finds out the letter is addressed to Noirtier Villefort, immediately burning up the letter to remove all evidence. He then arrests Dantés and be ordered to be taken to the Chateau D'If where he rots for over a decade and almost no way of getting out.
During his imprisonment, he meets a priest named Abbe Faira where the priest teaches him many things to know in life and to scholar him. He transforms the unworldly Dantés into a knowledgeable and wise person. Though the priest does pass away eventually due to an incident in the underground passage that he had worked on for many years during his stay. Before passing away though, Abbe tells Dantés that there is a great hidden treasure and where it is buried.
Following the death of Abbe, Dantés sneakily goes into the burial sack of Abbe and replaces him to be thrown off the cliff to escape. He lands on an island with a few pirates. He fights Jacopo in the battle of death, and spares his life to let him be Dantés's companion on his journey back to Marseilles. He focuses solely on finding the treasure Abbe told him about.
After finding the treasure, Dantés's riches seem boundless and instead of living a life of full enjoyment, his next goal was to get vengeance on mainly 3 people, Fernand, Villefort, and Danglars. As all three live in Paris now, all 3 were part of the high society in Paris, thus Dantés needing to disguise himself in some sort of way to get to them, which then he plans to become a Count, eventually leading up to him being "The Counte of Monte Cristo".
The Count (Dantés) sets up a party, inviting many members of the Parisian High Society, including all the people that he wanted vengeance on. He then takes each person one at a time to set them up for failure. Danglars is tricked into the act of Embezzlement and Villefort exposing the conspiracy of his own father's murder.
The count gets closer access to Fernand and Mercedes. He then tells Luigi and his crew to set up a scene where Fernand's son Albert, gets kidnapped and Dantés is to go in there to save him.
After being able to have access to Fernand and Mercedes's estate, Mercedes recognizes Dantés as the count. This escalates quickly as Mercedes is shocked and is very curious about how Dantés was able to survive the past decade trapped in the Chateau D'If. The count is still upset about what Mercedes had done and was very close of turning everything back on her until Mondego has basically lost everything due to gambling and committing numerous crimes. Mercedes refusing to follow Fernand any longer, tells Dantés the truth how she was impregnated by Dantés shortly before he was arrested. She wanted Albert to have a father. In the truth though, Albert's biological father is the count himself.
Finally, having the will to forgive, Count Dantés falls in love with Mercedes again, and, with those that ruined his life out of the way now, he resolves to live a fresh and new life with Mercedes. Despite all the dark and regrettable things that avoided many happy times with each other and with their son Albert.
